Blog post #2 Poetry

When it comes to writing poetry, it's a lot different than writing about poetry. When I write poetry, I am in a

creative state of mind. I think more deeply and express myself in regards to my deep emotions and feelings.

When writing poetry, it creates different aspects of brainstorming and expression in my eyes.

Writing poetry involves different formats and structures that you can play around with. What I really like about

writing poetry is that it is subjective to the individual. A person can write a poem that is formatted in any way

they want, such as free verse. There is no right or wrong way of writing poetry and that is something I value in it.

Writing about poetry on the other hand is a different thing. For instance, it is when you go deep into analyzing

the poem and its meaning. What is so complicated about it is that we as the readers never really know what

the poet is really trying to demonstrate. However, this is something I really enjoy about poetry analysis because

it can always be up for interpretation to the individual reading the piece of work. There is also the critical thinking

aspect in reading about poetry as we use our own individual minds to try and navigate the meaning behind the

famous words of a poet.

For me, I think the techniques of analyzing a poem aids me to create amazing poems of my own. When I wrote

about Emily Dickinson’s poem “Because i could not stop for Death”, it helped me explore the different forms and

structure of writing my own poem. I think the more I write about poetry, the better I am at expressing myself in my

own pieces of work.

I think creating poems is a great way for expressive thinking and will want to incorporate this into my future

teaching somehow. I think poetry really digs into someone's unique mind and their feelings and provides a

great sense of the writer's personality and ways of thinking. It helps with emotional release and requires

introspective thoughts. Thus, I think the techniques of analyzing a poem can aid  students to create amazing poems

of their own.

  1. Hi Leah, I enjoyed reading your blog post about the difference between writing poetry and writing about poetry. I think you make a good point about the formatting. When writing your own poetry, you have the freedom to choose how you would like to express the ideas you wish to convey. On the other hand, writing about poetry is much more restrictive because the reader is trying to analyze the poem to decipher the meaning. Even if the reader is wrong to what the author had intended, they are still able to contribute to the conversation in their writing of poetry. I also like how you mentioned the benefits of writing poetry. Authors of poetry are able to express themselves and find a method of bringing these internal thoughts out into the world. In my experience with our poetry writing assignments, I found that they were very helpful in putting myself into the shoes of an author. This will help when doing poetry analysis since I now have a different perspective on the writing medium.

  2. Hey Leah
I really enjoyed reading your post! I think you did a great job of explaining how writing poetry and writing about poetry are two totally different experiences. I agree that poetry allows for so much creativity and expression. It’s really freeing to write in a way that feels personal and unique and the fact that there’s no right or wrong way to do it makes it easier in a way. I also love how you brought up the challenge of analyzing poetry. It’s interesting how a poem can have so many layers and everyone might interpret it differently. I think your point about how writing about poetry can help you write your own is really true. The more we analyze the more we can understand how to apply those techniques to our own creative work.
