blog #1 Media and Technology

Greetings everyone, my name is Leah Wolf and I am currently in my last semester as a student at Csun. I am pursuing my bachelor degree in the English Subject Matter major. My goal is to become an educator/teacher for highschool students. With this goal, I want to leave a positive impact on my students and their generation of teaching and learning as a whole. I want to hopefully make their learning experience fun and didactic at the same time. Sharing my knowledge with my future students is something that I am looking forward to.

With today's generation and learning styles, technology has really taken over in both positive and negative ways. The cons involve expanding new ways of learning. For example, platforms such as google docs and google classroom and more give excellent methods for students to communicate with each other, creating a safe learning environment as well as the ability to collaborate with peers. As a soon to be teacher, I see the use of these types of platforms to be very effective and I have hope that it can even be a more safe and helpful space for students in the future generations. However, some technology used in classrooms is unacceptable. AI for instance, is a tool some think can be helpful, but to what extent? Artificial intelligence is not always reliable and can contain many errors. In addition to that, it also can prohibit students' critical thinking skills because of how easily accessible it is to get answers to certain questions, ultimately lessening their chances of strategic thinking. Therefore, I believe using AI, especially in adolescent years, doesn't do much justice in terms of expanding their learning abilities.

In my years of experience, the use of technology helped me tremendously in school, work, and many other settings, however it depends on how an individual chooses to use it. With that being said, as a teacher I will allow my students to use technology in a way that is effective, erasing any form of sources that will block their ability to learn and think critically.

Overall, I strongly consider all educators to take the use of technology into deep consideration as it is a strong source of  innovative material that can be both positive and negative to students' learning abilities and development skills.

  1. Hi Leah, I enjoyed reading your blog post. I hadn't thought too much about how technology such as Google's services provides many free options for students to use in the classroom. These services certainly benefit many as they do not have access/cannot afford Microsoft services such as Microsoft Word. Regarding your claims of artificial intelligence usage, I agree that it can be detrimental to students’ learning and development of critical thinking skills. As of now, artificial intelligence is too new to be effectively used in the classroom, especially since there are no classes that teach such usage yet. While I definitely think artificial intelligence will continue to be a part of our society (and classroom,) I do not think it is something we should completely reject but be open to learning and how it can be utilized as a tool as opposed to just doing all of one’s work for them.
